Retribution Paladin
A burst-oriented melee DPS that brings powerful raid buffs but modest personal damage.
How It Feels to Play
Retribution Paladin in TBC is... complicated. On one hand, you finally deal real damage. Crusader Strike gives you an actual button to press, Seal of Blood (Horde) or Seal of Command (Alliance) provides meaningful weapon procs, and your burst with Avenging Wrath can be impressive. On the other hand, your sustained DPS is middle-of-the-pack at best, and you'll constantly hear jokes about being a 'Lolret.'
The truth is, Retribution's value isn't just personal DPS; it's what you bring to the group. Sanctity Aura boosts Holy damage for yourself and nearby casters, your Judgements apply useful debuffs, and Blessing of Might/Wisdom are raid-critical buffs. A good Ret Paladin makes everyone around them better.
The rotation is straightforward: keep your Seal up, Crusader Strike on cooldown, Judge when needed, and auto-attack in between. There's downtime between abilities, which can feel slow compared to a Fury Warrior or Enhancement Shaman. But when Seal of Command procs on a big two-handed weapon swing, the damage numbers are deeply satisfying.
Strengths
- Powerful raid buffs and utility
- Satisfying burst damage with Avenging Wrath
- Simple rotation, great for newer players
Pain Points
- Below-average sustained DPS compared to pure DPS classes
- Social stigma; many players still dismiss Ret
- Auto-attack heavy playstyle with downtime between abilities
Demand & Supply
Most raids bring one Ret Paladin for the buffs and utility, but the personal DPS is modest. Competition for that one spot can be fierce. You'll have an easier time in casual guilds.
Talent Build
Standard Retribution DPS
5/8/48Go 48 deep for Crusader Strike, then grab key talents in Holy (Divine Strength for 10% Strength) and Protection (Precision for 3% hit). Your rotation is simple: keep your Seal up (Seal of Blood for Horde, Seal of Command for Alliance), Crusader Strike on cooldown, Judge when needed. Auto-attack fills the gaps.
Stat Priority
Hit cap first so Crusader Strike and auto-attacks don't miss. Expertise reduces dodges. Strength converts to Attack Power and scales well. Crit is valuable for burst. Spell Damage boosts Consecration and Seal damage but is a lower priority.
